We need a new political movement that will clean up the corruption of Irish Politics and offer a real alternative to the existing political establishment.
The People Before Profit Alliance is the start of such a movement.
Instead of saying “Elect us and we will bring you change”, we say “Organize Yourselves – People Power Will Bring Change.”
In Cork, as well as all around the country, we work with people and groups on the ground to effect change and empower ourselves.
PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT ALLIANCE: AN INTRODUCTION
The People Before Profit Alliance was formally established in October 2005 by workers from a variety of local campaigns. Its aim is to reverse neo-liberal policies which place wealth creation for the few over the welfare of communities in Ireland.
The Alliance represents a different form of politics, fitting for the 21st century. It sees “people power” and the mobilisation of citizens in workplaces, communities and on the streets as the key to bringing change in society. It is the ambition of the Alliance to operate on a 32-county basis and to offer a radical vision for our country.
In addition to its aim of deepening the links between community groups, the Alliance also wishes to explore the potential for electoral politics but it is not interested in electing people who will join coalition governments with the dominant right-wing parties because they have all signed up to the “business success is paramount” ethic.
The alliance opposes neo-liberal policies, including: the sell-off of Ireland’s natural resources; the privatisation and run down of public amenities; the destruction of the environment and our heritage through a flawed planning process; the prioritisation of corporate profit above the environment; poor public health and labour conditions and standards; widespread corruption; the erosion of civil liberties; tax cuts for the rich and corporations while bin charges and stealth taxes rise for the majority; the erosion of neutrality through the growing presence of US troops in Shannon (we supported the American people against George Bush and therefore oppose the use of Irish airports and airspace by the US military); the mistreatment of immigrants.
The Alliance includes a number of different organisations including the Socialist Workers Party, the Community & Workers Action Group and members of the Campaign for an Independent Left.
The People Before Profit Alliance has one TD, elected in Dun Laoghaire and fifteen councillors, across the country including one in Belfast.
WHAT WE STAND FOR
An Alternative Economic Agenda
The People Before Profit Alliance’s alternative budget calls for abolition of water & property taxes, lifting the USC burden, the reversal of unfair cuts, and major public investment in social housing, services and infrastructure.
PBPA says big business, the very wealthy and top earners must make greater tax contribution to fund meaningful recovery. View our proposals in detail here.
A Fair Tax System
We stand for a fair taxation system to fund public services based on ability to pay, not bin taxes and stealth taxes that hurt the less well-off.
Free, Quality, Healthcare for All
We say no to privatisation of healthcare or a two-tier health system. We call for a reversal of bed closures and cut-backs in local hospitals. We stand for a comprehensive national health service which treats people according to medical need and not wealth.
Housing for All
With 100,000 families on the housing list across the country, record numbers of people living in utterly inadequate emergency accommodation and rents spiralling out of control, we urgently need a radical housing campaign to pressure the government to build council houses and introduce rent controls. We call for an emergency government programme to provide social and affordable housing to all that need it. Get involved in our housing campaign in Cork.
Decent Public Transport
We want cheaper fares, extra buses and major investment in an integrated public transport system to reduce congestion and pollution.
We argue for full union rights, equal conditions for all workers and an end to outsourcing and exploitation of immigrant workers.
Real Local Democracy
We stand for proper funding for local government and genuine public participation, transparency and accountability in planning and development issues.
Protecting our Environment
We call for major investment in sustainable energy, public transport and public recycling infrastructure to deal with global warming and pollution. We want real protection for our natural and coastal environment.
Using Ireland’s Natural Resources to Benefit the People
We call for Corrib Gas and other vital natural resources to be taken into public ownership and used for the benefit of the people.
Keeping Ireland out of US-led War
We argue to end the use of Shannon by the US military for war in Iraq or elsewhere.
We encourage active support for grass-roots community and social movements to bring about real change.
